Tourism in Angola declined but still yielded 30.3 million
In 2017, 260,961 tourists entered Angola, less than the 397,485 registered in the previous year. Tourism revenues have earned the Angolan state 10 billion kwanzas (30.3 million euros).
According to the director of the Office of Studies, Planning and Statistics (GEPE) of the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism of Angola, Mário dos Santos, quoted in the Jornal de Angola, the tourism sector in Angola represents 3.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). ).
Revenues in 2017, however, represented a decrease of 2 billion kwanzas (six million euros) compared to 2016, when the sector generated 12 billion kwanzas (36.3 million euros), a fact that the director of GEPE attributed to the “precarious economic situation” the country is going through.
Fewer tourists than in 2016
In 2017, 260,961 tourists entered Angola, less than the 397,485 registered in 2016, a reduction that forced the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism to set an agenda with other partners to prevent the number of entries from continuing to decline.
The Ministry of Hospitality and Tourism has admitted that tourists will only enter the country if the hotel, road, transport, security, sanitation, energy and water infrastructure becomes “truly operational”, since only then, will it “strengthen industry and the tourism economy “.
The provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Huila, Huambo and Cabinda received the most tourists, while the main countries sending tourists to Angola were South Africa, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
